Immigration and Income
“New Brunswick is attracting relatively few immigrants, but the earning power of those who stay here is at par or higher than that of lifelong residents.”
This is good news for those promoting New Brunswick for immigration. However, the reality is that most immigrants to New Brunswick are coming as skilled immigrants (health care, teachers, etc.) whereas most coming to Toronto are going into the service industry (taxi drivers, hotel desk clerks, etc.).
My point is that there may come a time – real soon -when we also have to attract immigrants to work in our hotels, restaurants, taxis and other service industries. There is no negative to that – as long as it is not Phds driving those taxis. I think the problem comes when skilled immigrants expecting high wage jobs in their field end up cleaning rooms at the hotel. We should actually be targeting the skillsets we need.
