Redefining ‘major’ projects

What a difference a few years can make.

The provincial government and APEC both published lists of ‘major’ projects underway (or with potential in the case of APEC) in the last week or so and I have never seen such as weak list of projects.  A few years ago the major projects list included multiple projects in the multiple hundred millions and billions worth of investment.  Now, other than the finishing up of Lepreau and the potash expansion, there ain’t much left.

There are a bunch of public sector projects such as highway twinning, nursing homes and other government buildings.  The largest private sector projects are Bellaliant’s broadband rollout and a new piece of equipment at the Irving refinery.

It looks like capital spending on large projects will drop dramatically over the next few years unless new mining or other larger capital intensive projects come on the radar.
