Shermer, Illinois mattered

Ever felt like you were just bolo punched?  I was cooking supper when I heard that John Hughes just passed away.  I had this overwhelming sensation of sadness.  I can”t explain it but I have always hoped that Hughes would come back for one more defining movie.

Ferris Bueller, 16 Candles, Breakfast Club.  The defining movies for those of us who were coming of age in the early to mid 1980s.  Then he did a string of other movies and then just stopped for good – he’s been out of it for over 15 years.   Someone,  I believe, is even preparing a documentary on “where did he go” or some such thing.

In many ways he captured it.   In our careers, in how we are parents, in how we relate to others, in my opinion, much of it can be traced to the portrayal or authority figures, family, power relationships, etc. in his films.

He’s gone and I feel just a little older today.
