Tough to compete with Montreal in the life sciences area

Quebec Economic Development Minister Raymond Bachand is today announcing the creation of a new public-private Quebec consortium to stimulate research into drug development in the province. The consortium brings three pharma companies – Pfizer Canada, AstraZeneca Canada and Merck Frosst Canada – together with various Quebec government bodies. It’s being hailed as a first in Canada, said Bachand, while leading a trade mission at the BIO 2008 mission in San Diego.

I believe that those companies have had research operations in the Montreal area for quite some time; Montreal also has a few smaller life science outfits, including some university spin-offs. So that base has been there and now they are trying to expand it. Makes sense to grow what you are already doing, rather than try to branch out into several new areas at once.
