After the news broke yesterday that Frank McKenna has been offered the post of Ambassador to Washington, a colleague of mine remarked “why would Frank want to become a diplomat, that’s not his passion”. After pondering on that awhile, I have decided to take a contrarian view.
Canada does 85% of its trade with the United States. The majority of foreign investment into Canada comes from the there. In addition, many of the government-influenced economic problems facing Canada – originate in the United States (remember the U.S. ban on CDN beef, wheat tariffs, lumber tariffs, etc.).
Therefore, who better to put in Washington than Frank? He will stir the pot, hustle new business for Canada, better tackle trade disputes and — be a wonderful spokesperson for Canada.
I am very excited to hear this news. I just hope he can absorb the pay cut…..
